Calif. Police Officer Shot Pursuing Carjacked Vehicle

A Stockton police sergeant was struck at least once in the chest in an area not protected by his ballistic vest when a suspect opened fire from a carjacked vehicle during a chase.

A California police officer was shot while pursuing a suspect in a stolen vehicle early Wednesday.

The shooting happened at around 3:20 a.m. when Stockton police spotted a carjacked vehicle, KOVR-TV reports. Officers chased the vehicle until the driver jumped out and fled on foot.

When a police sergeant exited his vehicle to pursue the driver, a suspect still in the vehicle opened fire. At least one round struck the sergeant in the chest in an area not covered by his ballistic vest.

The sergeant was rushed to the hospital in stable condition.

The shooting is under investigation, and police are looking for a person of interest. Multiple law enforcement agencies are helping in the investigation.
